Double-clicking an object
A double-click asks the tools whether they can open the object:
Lines, dimensions and arcs do not need a double-click: their handles — the endpoints, the arc grips — are there as soon as you select them. The same goes for the anchor points of the guide of a spine, of a brush stroke, of an array on a path and of area type or type on a path: you see them by selecting the modifier, and the double-click is for entering it.
| Object | What happens |
|---|---|
| Text | opens for typing, with the cursor where you clicked |
| Path | its anchor points open, to edit one by one |
| Group | you enter it: the children are selected and edited one by one |
| Boolean, perspective, spine, array, clip and mask, area type or type on a path | you enter it: you edit the source shapes |
use of a symbol | you enter the symbol: changes apply to all its use instances |
| Photo grid | you enter it: you select the photos and adjust their cropping |
Inside a container
- The children stay where they were and the view does not move.
- The rest of the document is dimmed, under a veil the color of the canvas: it cannot be picked or selected.
- What you draw is created inside the container, and what you paste goes there.
- Inside a clip or a mask, the clipping and mask shapes show as a dashed blue outline.
- Inside a symbol, a pattern or a marker, you see the cross of the resource's origin.
At the bottom of the toolbar the Exit button appears, with the container's name in its tooltip.
Exiting
| Gesture | What it does |
|---|---|
| Exit | exits the container |
| Esc | exits, unless there was a gesture or a mode to cancel first |
| Double-click an empty area | exits |
When you exit, the container is selected. From a symbol you return to the use you entered from; from a resource opened from its panel you return to the previous view, with nothing selected.
