Character style
The whole text, or only the selected characters
Two modes
| Situation | What a panel changes |
|---|---|
| text closed and selected | the whole text; any style a character declared on its own is removed |
| text open with characters selected | only those characters |
| text open with only the cursor | the style stays pending for what you type next; moving the cursor discards it |
A character typed inside a word takes the style of the character before it. If the selected characters have different styles, the panel shows the style of the text.
What a character can have
Fill (color, gradient or pattern) and its opacity, stroke and its width, opacity, font, size, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, letter spacing and word spacing. A line drops by the largest size it contains.
The Text panel
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Font | the font: the six system fonts (Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Georgia, Times New Roman, Courier New), the twenty families of the Janvas library, and, in an "Installed" group, those installed on the computer, if you have granted permission. The selected family loads immediately |
| Size | the size: slider from 1 to 200, and a box for any value |
| Line height | the leading, as a factor of the size; empty means 1.2. Slider from 0.5 to 3 |
| Letter spacing | extra space between characters; slider from −5 to 50 |
| Word spacing | extra space between words; slider from −10 to 100 |
| Columns | the columns of the frame, from 1 to 10 (only for text in a frame) |
| Column gap | the space between columns; empty means the size (1em) |
| B · I · U · S | bold, italic, underline, strikethrough: toggle on and off |
| Alignment | left, center, right, justified |
| Scale on resize | off, resizing rewraps the lines to the new width and the size stays; on, the characters scale |
Dragging a slider is a preview; the release is one step. Color is in the Fill & stroke panel.
Justified text
Every line that wraps because of the width stretches to the edge, distributing the space between words. The last line of a paragraph stays as it is. In a story of threaded frames, the last line of a frame that continues into the next one is justified too.
Imported text
A text that came from a PDF or an SVG also rewraps when you resize it: lines, styles and paragraphs are kept, and the alignment — which a PDF does not declare — is inferred from the lines (right, center, left).
