The data panel
The cells of a table, as in a spreadsheet
Opening it
Double-click a table or a chart, use Edit data… in its panel, or open it from a table in Tables. It is a floating panel: you move it by its header and resize it from the corner. Columns have letters, rows have numbers.
Writing and selecting
- Click a cell to type in it. Tab and ⇧ Tab go to the next and previous cell, Enter to the one below; ⇧ Enter starts a new line in the cell.
- You select by dragging from one cell to another, with ⇧ + click, or from the headers: a letter takes the column, a number the row, the corner everything.
- ⌘ C, ⌘ X and ⌘ V copy, cut and paste the selected cells. Cells copied from a spreadsheet spread out from the active cell, and the grid grows as needed.
- ⌫ or Del empty the selection, Esc removes it.
Rows and columns
- Right-clicking the number of a row, the letter of a column or a cell opens the menu: insert above, below, to the left or to the right, delete, move.
- Entire selected rows or columns can also be moved by dragging their header: a line shows where they will land.
- Type gives the column a type: automatic (cell by cell), text, number, currency, percent, date. Numbers, currencies and percentages go to the right, text and dates to the left.
- With a selection, the items apply to all its rows or columns.
Apply and undo
- Apply writes data, types, rows and columns into the table, in one step, and closes the panel. The × closes it leaving out what you have not applied.
- ⌘ Z and ⌘ ⇧ Z undo and redo in the panel what is not yet applied; after that, the document's undo — and the grid follows it.
The Google Sheet
The Google Sheet button opens its dialog. The sheet must be shared as "anyone with the link": it is read without an account.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Link | the link of the sheet, or its id |
| Tab | the name of the sheet inside the file; empty, the one in the link |
| Range | the part to read: "A1:D6"; empty, everything |
| Mode | embedded: read once, then the data belongs to the file. linked: read again every time you open the document, and you change the data in the sheet |
Load reads the sheet. Values arrive as the sheet displays them ("1,800.00 €", not 1800), and the column types come from its format. When linked, the grid is read-only: copying and the column type remain. The data read stays in the document, which opens even offline.
Your browser reads a Google Sheet directly from Google: every read reaches Google.
